One vase, every trick the kilns knew. Qianlong’s potters stacked more than a dozen glaze techniques onto a single body to prove they could.
The piece is nicknamed the “mother of porcelain” because it carries so many methods at once, from crackle and underglaze blue to famille-rose and kiln-transmutation, each in its own reserved panel. Firing them together risks ruining all of it; the survival of one perfect example was itself a small industrial feat.
Qianlong collected mastery the way others collected objects. The vase is less a vessel than a catalogue of what Qing ceramics could do, written in clay. Beauty was not the only goal; demonstration was.
