A bowl in doucai (contending colours), made for the Qing imperial court during the Qianlong reign.
Doucai pairs an underglaze cobalt outline with overglaze enamels filled in after a second low firing, a technique that matured under the Ming Chenghua emperor and was revived with great refinement by the Qing court.
Made during the sixty-year Qianlong reign, when the emperor’s taste for antiquity and display met the fullest resources of the imperial kilns. It is held in The Palace Museum, Beijing, and the image is reproduced here with the museum’s credit.
