The Album
The Jinling Twelve Beauties refer to the twelve most distinguished female characters in the classical Chinese novel Dream of the Red Chamber. "Jinling" is an ancient name for modern-day Nanjing in Jiangsu Province, and "Chai" (hairpin) symbolizes women.
This particular album, The Main Register of Jinling Twelve Beauties, depicts in sequence the tragic heroines of the Jia clan. The album is currently housed in the Posner Center at Carnegie Mellon University. The artist and exact creation date remain unknown, but it bears the seal: 鐵如意館 (Tie Ru Yi Guan).

Jia Xichun
The youngest sister, an artist who becomes a nun.

Context
The Album's Provenance
This album bears the seal of 鐵如意館 (Tie Ru Yi Guan), indicating its connection to a notable collector or studio. The Posner Center acquired it through the family of Henry Posner. The delicate brushwork suggests it was created by a skilled artist familiar with traditional Chinese painting techniques.
Cultural Significance
Dream of the Red Chamber (红楼梦) by Cao Xueqin is considered China's greatest classical novel. The Jinling Twelve Beauties represent archetypes of feminine virtue, tragedy, and the Buddhist concept of impermanence.
