A celestial-sphere vase in famille-rose (powder-enamel, fencai), made for the Qing imperial court during the Qianlong reign.
Famille rose, or fencai, is an overglaze enamel perfected in the early eighteenth century: painters work on the fired glaze and fire again at low temperature, and a lead-arsenate pink gives the fruit and flowers a soft, graded volume.
Made during the sixty-year Qianlong reign, when the emperor’s taste for antiquity and display met the fullest resources of the imperial kilns. It is held in The Palace Museum, Beijing, and the image is reproduced here with the museum’s credit.
