A snuff bottle in famille-rose (powder-enamel, fencai), made for the Qing imperial court during the Daoguang reign.
Famille rose, or fencai, is an overglaze enamel perfected in the early eighteenth century: painters work on the fired glaze and fire again at low temperature, and a lead-arsenate pink gives the fruit and flowers a soft, graded volume.
Made during the Daoguang reign, as the court’s porcelain taste settled into quieter forms. It is held in The Palace Museum, Beijing, and the image is reproduced here with the museum’s credit.
